Meet the Boyz! Part 9

Alright folks, we have come to the top of our billing, the poster boy for "Boyz! Boys! Bois!", and our very special guest here in Seattle.

Jett Adore
"The No-Pantser Romancer"

"Jett's innovative, artistic, silly, sexy, scandalous, sophisticated, elegant, and elaborately theatrical performances are male stripteaseat its finest."

This hip cat strips down to his hat! Born and raise on the Isle of Romantica, he is the internationally beloved icon of glamor, passion and lusty elegance.

Jett Adore is one third of the Stage Door Johnnies, Chicago's award-winning male burlesque troupe, an old fashioned nudi show... with balls!  The Stage Door Johnnies (Jett Adore, Bazuka Joe and Ray Gunn) perform choreographed striptease, combining dance, classic jazz, humor, acrobatics and all-around shenanigans.

I addition to producing their own shows at Chicago's Park West Theater each month, the Johnnies team their titillating talents with the Dolls of Doom female burlesque in The Nuts 'N Cherries show throughout the year. They can also often be spotted in shows produced by Michelle L'amour and the Chicago Starlets.

Jett and his Stage Door Johnnies brothers have been seen shakin' their nasties all over Chicago and in many other major cities, as well as in festivals internationally.  He's gettin' his dance on the takin' his pants off... in way you've never imagined.

[Hot!!!]

I have heard about the Stage Door Johnnies.  I have seen pictures and a few video clips, but I have never had the opportunity to see, let alone work with one!  I am excited beyond words to work with Jett Adore during this show!  He is a class act, smooth, sexy, a man of style, and grace.  He is in a word... yiff.

You will NOT want to miss this show, my friends.  With "The Prince of Burlesque" Jett Adore, local legends Ernie Von Schmaltz and Waxie Moon, the delicious burlesque brothers, Trojan and Paris Original, sexy butch duo Black & Tan, the gender bending lothario, Daddy Z Deviant, kinky every-man, Man Johnson, exposing composer EmpeROAR Fabulous, and rhinestone stud Sir Eddie Van Glam... (oh and me!) this show is going to be awesome!

Tickets are still on sale, so take advantage of them now!

Meet the Boyz! Part 8

Alright folks we're almost there! Not only are we just a few days away from Seattle's first big 'Boylesk' extravaganza of the year, but we have just two more performers for you to get to know!  Tonight, let's meet our Emcee and Host...

Ernie Von Schmaltz
The Man, The Myth, The Mustache

Ernie Von Schmaltz is a 'ladies man'.  He is a player with all the right moves, the object of desire in the eyes of many young women, and a role-model for young  male exotic dancers all over The Emerald City, and Beyond.  He believes in the power of the mustache, of polyester and gold medallions, and the irresitible appeal of a health paunch on a virile man.  He is a gypsy at heart, traveling the land in a van, that will inevitably be a-rockin' next time you come a-knockin'.  He is The Man.

Ernie Von Schmaltz has been a performer and emcee in Seattle's burlesque scene since 2005, he is an instructor of boylesque at The Academy of Burlesque, and is one of the funniest Mustachioed Stallions in the business.  I have seen a number of shows hosted by this intimidating specimen of masculinity, and had the pleasure to be in one of them.  I am stoked to have Ernie Von Schmaltz as the Master of Ceremonies for this our Boy Royale of Burlesque, a Celebration of Boydom, the third, the thickets, longest, and juiciest installment of Boys! Bois! Boyz!

You won't want to miss this show, I assure you.  And if you aren't convinced yet... just stay tuned because "The Prince of Burlesque" has yet to make his appearance.

Meet the Boyz! Part 7

Our Featured Artist needs no introduction from me... but why not?

Waxie Moon

"Waxie Moon", a gender-blending "boylesque" performance-art stripping sensation has performed at various venues throughout Seattle including Key Arena, On the Boards, The Seattle Rep, ACT Theatre, The Moore Theatre and The Triple Door.

Career highlights include being features in Land of the Sweets, a Burlesque Nutcracker (produced by Lily Verlaine and Jasper McCann), performing in and choreographing House of Thee Unholy #2, 3 and 4 (produced by The Swedish Housewife) and being present by numerous performance organizations including On The Boards (Northwest New Works Festival and 12 Minutes Max), Bumbershoot and The Seattle Erotic Arts Festival.  She has performed "boylesque" for Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Carson Kreseley and The B-52's.  In 2010 he was nominated for a Gregory Award (Excellence in Theater, Washington State).  She is the subject of the feature-length documentary film Waxie Moon (directed by Wes Hurley) which has been screen at numerous film festivals, including The Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (Audience Award), The International Queer Fruits Film Festival (Jury Prize) and CineKink (NY Audience Choice Award - Honorable Mention).  He is also featured in the documentary film, A Wink and a Smile (directed by Deirdre Timmons).  In 2009 he was voted "Best Burlesque Performer" by The Seattle Weekly (Readers Poll).  Recently s/he acted in, co-wrote and co-produced Waxie Moon in Fallen Jewel (directed by Wes Hurley).

Ladies and Gentlemen, Waxie Moon is a Seattle Burlesque Icon.  S/he is a subject of man crushes by nearly ever straight male burlesque fan I know!  He is a role model to the "boylesque" community, myself included! She is fierce... and I don't use that term lightly!  I cannot express how excited I am to have Waxie Moon rejoin the cast of Boys! Bois! Boyz! after performing in our last show last May, or my joy at that once more the boyz will "Cum Together" around/over/on/etc. this Boylesque Phenomenon!

Make sure to get you tickets folks, because this show will be awesome!

Meet the Boyz! Part 6

The world of boylesque is as complex as another child of Madame Burlesque.  Our next pair of performers are from the "Butch" contingency of our art form, and for those in the know I happen to have a thing for Butches!

Black & Tan
Brown Fox

L-Boogie

You in the mood for milk chocolate?  Dark chocolate? Butch or femme?  This sexy hot chocolate duo is evidence that variety is the spice of life.  Fans of Bang for the Buck will recognize these hotties from the 3-time, award-winning, studly stripteasers, The Nerdz.  And if you’re an aficionado of the Seattle’s sexy drag king history, you’ll have fond memories of one of these studs setting stages on fire as part of the former drag and dance sensation, Milky Way.  Have a sweet tooth?  Keep your eyes peeled for shows by Another Brother Productions where this tasty twosome will be featured.  Introducing Brown Fox and L-Boogie as BLACK & TAN!

Every show brings something new to the table, and for me it is this sexy set of performers.  However, I have it from reliable sources (name drop... Miss Indigo Blue!) that Black & Tan are not to be missed.  High praise indeed.

We are just a week away from this amazingly sexy, boy/boi-soaked pageant of ecdysiasm and you should take advantage of the ongoing Advanced Ticket Prices on Brown Paper Tickets.

Meet the Boyz! Part 5

Ladies and Gentlemen, on today's edition of Meet the Boyz I've got a two-for-one special.  Please meet this sexy pair of Fraternal Teasers...

Paris Original
“Poetry in Motion”

Paris Original is poetry in motion, exuding the graceful elegance of balletic beauty. This international burlesque star calls on his extensive experience in many forms of dance and theatre to craft his unique style of burlesque. Possessing a statuesque aesthetic, he utilizes his affinity for movement to captivate, inspire and capture the hearts of audiences wherever he goes. Paris has toured nationally as well as to London and is also a founding member of the Neo-burlesque troupe Mod Carousel.

Trojan Original
“The Red Hot Manimal”

As a professional dancer, Trojan was classically trained in Ballet and Modern dance and has been performing dance professionally for seven years. In a fun twist of events, Trojan discovered Burlesque through his brother, Paris, who in turn had discovered it from The Luminous Pariah. Trojan’s first striptease was for a good friend’s bachelorette party, for which he and Paris created their first burlesque act: Swan Tease. The duet was such a hit that they got asked to do it again at the reception and he’s been performing Burlesque ever since.

Anyone who knows me, has followed my blog or heard me gush about my favorite performers will know that I have a long-standing crush on the Original Brothers! They are talented, confident, creative, and sexy to boot.  On top of that they are a pair of the sweetest boys you will ever meet!  Oh... and did I mention their TWINS?  Meep!

Dear Ones, you will NOT want to miss our show!  Boys! Bois! Boyz! is going to be packed with some of Seattle's finest boylesque talent.  Stay tuned for the for the next installment of "Meet the Boyz" and don't forget to pick up your tickets *** http://m.bpt.me/event/321943 ***

Meet the Boyz! Part 4

The Boyz keep on coming!

Man Johnson
AKA Paul O’Connell (POC)

Paul's interest in burlesque goes back to 2005, when a friend asked him to take photos of her act at an Academy of Burlesque recital. He immediately fell in love with the art form. Since that time he has taken over 70,000 live burlesque photos throughout Seattle, Portland and New York as well as burlesque festivals in Austin, New Orleans and Las Vegas.

Somewhere along the way he decided he might like to take off his clothes on stage. He took Miss Indigo Blue's 101 Boylesque class taught by Waxie Moon and Ernie Von Schmaltz. After that he became hooked. He has been lucky enough to perform at some of Seattle's most well know burlesque halls including The Rendezvous and The Rebar and working with established performers and producers. He was excited to be part of the summer of Nerdelsque last year performing in Stark Naked: A Nerdlesque Tribute to A Game of Thrones and Whedonesque Burlesque: acts inspired by the works of Joss Whedon. He has performed at The Texas Burlesque Festival in Austin. He was thrilled to be part of Miss Indigo Blues step-down number at 2012's Burlesque Hall of Fame. He describes his burlesque as Absurd-lesque: slightly demented, perverted and always silly. He likes to start with one concept and completely turn it on its head.

I saw the Boylesque 101 Recital that gave birth to Man Johnson.  If I recall correctly it was the same one in which Sir Eddie was re-Christened, and fellow artists Piston Chambers and Rip Curl came into existence.  That is to say it was a pretty momentous show!  I also shared the Burlesque 202 experience with that very same group, and it was a blast to see Man’s mind in action!

Man Johnson should be called the “Everyman of Burlesque”. He takes everyday situations, and preconceptions and takes them to the ‘kinky side of life’, flips them on their head, turns them inside0out and fs’em sideways.  As a character he is the kinky-geek that lives in his dirty old uncle’s basement.  Is that the right picture?  I think so…

We’ve asked Man to reprise one of our favorite numbers at this incarnation of Boys! Bois! Boyz! I won’t tell you which one, but it is a delightful tribute to a Japanese cartoon character.

We are less then TWO weeks out from this awesome Boy-Soaked Celebration of Burlesque.  So don't forget your tickets! *** http://m.bpt.me/event/321943 ***

Meet the Boyz! Part 3

We are less then two weeks away from Seattle's celebration of boylesk, "Boys! Bois! Boyz!" on March 1st!  With that in mind allow me to introduce the next of our performers!

Daddy Z Deviant

Daddy Z Deviant is the very distant cousin of Seattle's "Bitch in Charge", Diva le DĂ©viant.  This Germanic gender bending lothario is a product of Weimar Era aesthetics.  His darkly carefree attitude that "anything goes" stems from his belief that we could all die tomorrow...so...why not do it all, try it all, f&*k it all?  You've seen Daddy crooning and hosting on stages around Seattle including previous editions of "Boys, Bois, Boyz", Randy Andy's "Tomfoolery", La Petitie Mort's "Morbid Curositease", Another Brother Productions' "Butches Unwrapped, Sinner Saint Burlesque's "REVOLUTION", J9 Fierce presents "Sound and Smoke", and Cherry Manhattan's "The Beyond Real Human Female".  Please note, little kitty, that Daddy knows your heart belongs to him, but what he WANTS is between your legs!

If I were to sum up the sexual predilections, animal magnetism, and stage presence of this performer I would do so thusly: Daddy Z Deviant is what you would get if Marlene Dietrich and Alan Cumming had a love-child conceived during an absinthe soaked night of rough sex.  Nuff said, I think.

Meet the Boyz! Part 2

The continuing prelude to our 'celebration of boydom' coming to West Hall, Oddefellows on March 1st, I am pleased to introduce you to another of our Producers!

EmpeROAR Fabulous!!!
"The Exposing Composer"

EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! is an award-winning Seattle based singer-songwriter, boylesque performer, emcee, instructor and event producer.  He is The Exposing Composer, The Singing Slinger, The Turquoise Noise Maker and Electric Blue Shimmy-Shaker, Your Raunchy Ruler and King of Queer, EmpeROAR Fabulous!!!

He is the jewel you discover when you roll the rock, the Harry Winston cocktail ring you find in a thrift store, the bottle of bottom-shelf whiskey in a debutante's Prada purse, the pop you hear when the bubble bursts.

EmpeROAR is a performer par excellance, wholly devoted, incorrigibly and unashamedly unique!  His performances have been called "crazy" by some, "insane" by others, and who am I to gainsay them? I've seen spectators giggle, blush, laugh and avert their eyes, even look slightly bewildered all in response to this artist's evocative (you might say explicit) lyrics, brash stage presence, and cleverly absurd concepts.  From sing and strips about sex-starved airline stewards to graceful renditions of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tales, EmpeROAR Fabulous applies unwavering dedication to his art, and a feylike glamor to everything he does.

With the "Prince of Burlesque" Messieur Jett Adore, a bonafide "Knight Erotic", Sir Eddie Van Glam, and the "Ruler of Raunch" EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! our little show is looking to be something of a Boy Royale of  Burlesque!  Make sure you have your ticket! *** http://m.bpt.me/event/321943 ***

Meet the Boyz! Part 1

Ladies and Gentlemen in only three short weeks Boys! Bois! Boyz! returns to the stage with a very special show starring “Chicago’s Las Vegas Showboy” Jett Adore.

This is the third time that Sir Eddie Van Glam and I have worked on producing this show together and we are stoked to add veteran producer and performer EmpeROAR Fabulous to our team AND to partner with the prestigious organization that is Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque!

We have a fantastic cast of Seattle Boyleskers on top of Jett (wait… I guess we should get his consent before making those plans.  :-p) and first and foremost among them are the incomparable Ernie Von Schmaltz, who will be hosting our show, and ‘international stripping sensation’ Waxie Moon who is helping us to once more come together.

More to come on these upstanding icons of Seattle Boylesque… for now, I would like to introduce the boys on our production team.

Sir Eddie Van Glam
"The Rhinestone Stud"
Boylesk Performer, Producer, Emcee, Actor, Professional Wrestler, Hair Stylist

"The Rhinestone Stud," Sir Eddie Van Glam has been thrilling audiences by mixing machismo & metrosexuality since 2009.  He is co-producer of the Seattle Boylesk Revue "Boys! Bois! Boyz!" as well as co-producer & trainer of the Seattle based stage combat troupe, "3-2-1 Battl!" With abs of righteousness & a suitcase full of awesome, this sharp dressed man delivers a sizzling performance every time!"

I first saw Sir Eddie Van Glam as newcomer “Van Glam” in an early production of The Nightmare Before Christmas Cabaret.  Van Glam rocked my socks off with (and he is going to hate me for telling you this…) his interpretation of Bad Romance, sporting fish nets and heels.  Since this first foray into burlesque “Van Glam” joined the AoB Boylesque 101 class and was re-christened “Sir Eddie Van Glam”.

Since that time Sir Eddie has continued to grow as an artist, performer and as a producer, and is one of Seattle’s BIGGEST boylesque fans and supporters to boot. He has all the bravado and charm of Lancelot (sans the rainbow colored mambo sleeves), and the sex appeal and good natured camp of Hollywood Elvis Presley. What can you say about a hetero-sexual man with a hard on for rhinestones, and an intense desire to take his clothes off in front of people?

Easy.  You say “Thank you!”

Ladies and Gentlemen, I know a little about what Sir Eddie is bringing to the stage on March 1st and I can say this.  It is something new.  It is something sexy.  And it is something you won’t want to miss!

Boys! Bois! Boyz! is a bi-annual Celebration of Boydom produced by and featuring some of Seattle’s hottest boylesque performers! On March 1st, Boys! Bois! Boyz! in partnership with The Academy of Burlesque is bringing you a bigger, thicker, longer lasting bundle of boy flesh than ever before.
Get your tickets soon. This fantastical spectacle of boylesque should not be missed! http://m.bpt.me/event/321943 !!!

Sinner Saint Burlesque, "Long Kiss Goodnight"

In the “golden age of burlesque”, the women of bump & grind would perform for upwards of 20 minutes at a time.  The drawn out art of the tease, blended with a profuse amount of choreography or improvised dance meant that a single artist was an entire ‘Act’ all to herself.  Today the standard burlesque piece averages at about 5 minutes.  With YouTube, Netflix, Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets dishing out instant gratification we are mentally geared toward shorts.  This isn’t necessarily bad! It’s just a new standard. Personally I love it when a performer can tell an entire story in the course of a single song, and can get bored if the ‘reach’ of an act extends the performer’s ‘grasp’.

With this in mind the concept of a burlesque show devoted entirely to contemporary long form burlesque, that is acts averaging 10 minutes or more, and involving varied elements of performance, is a risky one.  However, if you have been following my sporadic posts over the past 10-12 months you may note that one troupe in particular has been getting its kicks tackling risky concept shows!

I am, of course speaking of Sinner Saint Burlesque.

photo by Danny Boulet of WittyPixel Photography

The first of SSB’s 2013 season is called “Long Kiss Goodnight” and is composed of four feature acts, and a sprinkling of shorter group numbers.  Of the troupe’s five primary members, four participate in each night’s performance.  The themes of the individual pieces are surprisingly diverse, sharing only a joint dedication to a longer-form of act structure.  This diversity of theme provides the necessary variety needed to maintain the attention of a typically distracted audience and was, for me, very satisfying.

The show’s host, Cherry Manhattan, spun a story built around a decadent party.  Sporting a lovely RP dialect, a variety of evening and ‘after-evening’ outfits, and playing the role of a gracious, candid, professional party girl, Cherry was delightful and engaging!  Her mixing of borderline adolescent obsession with kissing, a peppering of pop-culture references, sophisticated innuendos, and obscure allusions allowed her to connect with the varied mob that is The Noc Noc’s usual crowd.  This was my first opportunity to enjoy Cherry’s hosting style and I very much hope to experience her again!

The first of SSB’s featured act was Polly Wood’s 'extended edition, director’s cut' of her Elizabeth Taylor Tribute.  Polly’s approach to the longer form structure of the show was to provide, in sequence, strip tease, reverse strip, strip tease, reverse strip, and final reveal.  In her interpretation of the famed Hollywood diva, Polly explored two of Taylor’s most remembered roles: Cleopatra and Maggie the Cat, and executed the costume changes necessary to play those roles, all without revealing her… well ‘lady apples’?  Polly’s take on Ms. Taylor leans more to the lighthearted than to the smoldering, walking the line between tribute and good natured parody, but she successfully captured moments of iconic Liz Taylor sexiness that the audience very much enjoyed it!

Second was Dona De Couri’s three part sketch/burlesque act involving a kissing booth, an Andrew Sisters’ style performance between herself, Polly Wood and Jesse Belle-Jones, and finally a classic strip tease.  The kissing booth sketch was hysterical! Dona’s initial revulsion, followed by decided enthusiasm provided the audience with vivid images of her ‘clients’.  The musical performance that followed was a delightful surprise.  I love it when performers open up in other ways!  Finally, Dona’s skills as a dancer, and consummate teaser, successfully pleased, entertained and titillated the audience, in the third movement of her piece.

Next up, Jesse Belle-Jones becomes the medium for a Grecian Goddess with her interpretation of Actaeon and Artemis.  Okay this was one of my favorite acts, but I am a huge myth buff! The act begins with a rendition of SSB’s harem girl group act, a piece that evokes popular images of Sapphos and the Isle of Lesbos.  Then with a little exposition from our gracious hostess, we are transported to a forest pool where the Goddess Artemis is caught in the act of bathing.  I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that this little furry yiffed, the audience was left spell bound, and Julie Taymor would have approved.

Finally, Evilyn Sin Claire channels the majesty of the peacock, the mystery of a masquerade, and the allure of reflection.  Have you ever had a conversation with someone in a mirror?  There is something fascinating about reflections.  They capture our attentions, and our imagination.  Even as self aware individuals there is a child-like feeling of looking into another world. (Well that could just be me.)  Ms. Sin Claire utilizes this fact beautifully, teasing herself and allowing us to more fully experience the voyeuristic thrill that is watching a burlesque act.  This has to rank as one of my favorite piece performed by Evilyn.  There was a calm control about her that dominated the audience in a way I’m not sure they were fully aware of.  Few performers have the effect on me that Evilyn does (I’ll let you interpret that as you wish), and I am happy to say that once more she left me speechless!

So there we have it. Four featured acts, with a sprinkling of group participation, all skillfully performed with appropriate flash, flare and sex appeal.  It is a simple but risky concept. It was a show that I believe worked beautifully.  It was a show that I hope inspires and encourages other burlesque artists to up their game, go deeper into their art and make the antici.....PATION last longer for Seattle's burlesque fans.

Sinner Saint Burlesque is one of Seattle’s oldest, longest, continually operating burlesque troupes, and can be found at The Noc Noc Every Thursday Night.  I strongly encourage you to attend their run of a “Long Kiss Goodnight” which plays through March 14th!

Sinner Saint Burlesque, "The Hot Seat"

First, Ladies and Gentlemen, I must apologize for my absence.  I feel as if I dropped off the face of the world a couple of months ago.  Life happens, or so they say, but it does feel good to be back!

For those who have read my blog before, it will come as no surprise that my first review in months is of a Sinner Saint Burlesque show.  Over the years I have had the opportunity to experience, and chronicle many of the adventures of this group of ladies.  I have seen members come and go, and I have witnessed the troupe grow from an alliance of individual performers into the solid performance entity they are becoming today.  That is to say, not only are the ladies of SSB, extremely talented as individuals, they are solid as an artistic team.  They have grown from individual elements to full on Captain Planet. (Yes I was a wee one in the 90s.) Their most recent show proves it.

At first glance “The Hot Seat” may throw you for a loop.  While SSB has long established a reputation for its themed shows, and this past year delved into the art of narrative driven shows, “The Hot Seat” takes these two to a new level.  This is an entire show built around a chair.  You read that correctly, “The Hot Seat” is an ecdysiastic spectacle built around a piece of furniture.  I had no idea what to expect, but having seen it I only wish I had done so earlier.  This review doesn’t give y’all much time to check it out, so read quick and get to The Noc Noc next Thursday (Oct 12th).

The narrative is spoken from the perspective of a humble burlesque prop, a curvy backed chair, painted silver and clearly marked by the SSB logo.  At the beginning the audience is told about how ‘The Chair’ was found and brought into the group to fulfill various needs of the Sinner Saints.  As the story progresses, we find out how the chair’s relationship with the troupe grew from humble prop, to coveted object, to confidant and sanctuary.  We see ‘The Chair’ become a safe place for the Ladies to find support, experiment artistically and live out their wildest fantasies.  We learn that the Chair is not just a simple piece of furniture, it is a “Hot Seat” that knows the Sinner Saints as intimately as any lover.

You might think that a story told from the perspective of a chair is a little odd, and at first glance you’d be right, but considering how many Pixar movies have told stories from the perspective of inanimate objects you should know that ‘odd’ often equates with artistic and entertainment gold.

Diva le Deviant, hostess and author of “The Hot Seat” gave voice to ‘the Chair’.  In her strongest piece of narrative hosting to date, Diva was through the show sympathetic and sexy, funny and clever, and believe it or not, adorably innocent.  Her commitment to the perspective of her character, kept her focused and the audience rapt.  Her jokes were cleverly executed and her attachment to the dancers ‘using her’ was clear and believable.  She did not simple tell us her story, she drew us in and allowed us to share it.

The Sinner Saints themselves brought some serious game to the table.  As was expected their acts revolved around, and used ‘the Chair’.  Each of the Ladies rocked at least one new piece, and the major group number was an amazing twist on one of their classic acts.  For those familiar with SSB material, “Meine Chair” will rock your world.

Lady Tatas provided both class and comedy.  In her first act she offered the audience a classic tease, and had the honor of being the first derriere to grace the ‘Hot Seat’.  Her second act was more of an actor’s monologue then a strip tease, but Tatas pulled it off where few could.  Have you ever seen a grown woman have an argument with a piece of furniture? Crazy great aunts, aside, you have to see this one.  Intel: Lady Tatas prefers her furniture butch.

SSB interns Nikola Teasela and Lotti Glitterati each shared their romances with the chair.  The latter, Ms. Glitterati showed that sometimes we only want something because everyone else does.  Usually, we want such things all to ourselves.  Lotti was beautiful in classic glamour, and while the chair may have slipped through her fingers in the end, she didn’t let the ‘one that got away’ faze her.  She’ll get what she wants eventually.  Nikola bore her soul, while on that chair.  She offered the audience a piece of what I call, “burlesque dramatique” a darker, more serious piece in which exposure is more important that titillation.  It was a risky choice, but she did it well.

Guest Artist Kylie Koyote stepped in to participate in the “poly-armchair-amory” (a Diva-ism, not original Fosse Jack!), and brought two of her signature pieces to the stage.  Her Flamenco inspired chair dance was the first.  I have seen this act before and I can happily say that Kylie never stops getting better!  It was a beautiful piece, and ‘the chair’ made for a very steady Latin Lover.  Her second act however, was the one that really got the crowd going.  From ‘imitation’ to ‘fellation’, Kylie made the audience pant.  This is why I’d like to dub her the “Diamond Dog” of Seattle.  (Seriously have you seen this girl drool over rhinestones? Ha!)

Finally, the senior star of SSB, Ms. Evilyn Sin Claire did not disappoint!  In both acts she made that chair work.  In the ‘Wild Child Tango’ she reveled in an abandon of passion and desperation.   Longing for forbidden love, all she could do was live out her fantasies in her mind, and on the chair.  Speaking of fantasies, Evilyn’s second act made me laugh and blush harder than anything I’ve seen in a long time.  Though short and sweet, the closing act of the show was as hot as a bolt of lightning.

If you haven’t gathered, “The Hot Seat” is a very strong show.  The individual acts are, across the board, solid and sexy.  The group acts blend classic SSB and the newer, more theatrical stylings the group has embraced.  The narrative is the strongest they have come up with, and the concept is one of the most unique I have seen.  I wish I had reviewed this earlier because I really think that every burlesque fan needs to see this.

Sinner Saint Burlesque performs every Thursday night at The Noc Noc, in Downtown Seattle.  ‘The Hot Seat’ runs for one more week, which means you have one more shot to see this romantic comedy about a group of girls and The Chair they share!

Boom Boom L'Roux's Late Night Revue 4/20

This past Friday night saw the second of three late night burlesque variatae shows occurring this spring at The Triple Door.

Boom Boom L’Roux’s Late Night Revue was hosted by local personality Vincent Drambuie, and featured the talents of the producer, Miss Boom Boom L’Roux, herself, Canadian transplant Lola Lockheart, the fearless, Jenny Penny, Emerald City burlesquers Persephone Illyri, and The Luminous Pariah, and the one and only ‘Yodeling Dominatrix’, Manuela Horn.

The Luminous Pariah and Manuela Horn were the high points of the show.  As a long time Luminous fan, it was a pleasure to see him on the big stage again.  Some artists really shine when they have the space to fill and the freedom to move and he is definitely among them.  Also I burlesque narrated by David Attenborough may be my favorite thing ever.  It was my first time seeing the yodeling dominatrix (well on stage), after hearing about her from other artists and her appearance on America’s Got Talent, and seeing an impromptu song and spanking at a friend’s birthday party.  I was super excited for this opportunity, and the sexy, graceful giantess that she is by no means failed to impress.  'Highway to Yodel' may also be one of my favorite things.

Aside: The Luminous Pariah can be caught around town, but next week leaves for a two month tour with his troupe Mod Carousel.  The foursome (which includes The Original Twins, Paris and Trojan, and the Incomparable Leeni) will be stopping in New York and then jetting across the pond to tour Europe.  Manuela can be found as a regular performer at Teatro Zinzanni.  Both can be found on Facebook, and I think you should look them up.

As a host, Vincent Drambuie’s material is tried and well used.  His approach to hosting is a blending Bob Hope style stand-up comedy and unabashed lasciviousness.  His jokes aren’t particularly funny, a fact that he is unashamedly self-referential about, but his commitment to the material and genuine appreciation of the artists he works with, is what makes him good at what he does.

Persephone Illyri’s performances were very pretty, though the material of her second piece was a little confusing.  I loved the dress, the song, the rocking horse, and even the knife play but didn’t understand how they fit together.  Lola Lockheart’s first act was simple and cute, though I think she would benefit from a slightly heftier boa, size does matter when burlesque props are considered. It is all about finding what size works for you! Also, I don’t want to be harsh, but I do need to say, I felt that her vocal selection in act two was ill picked.  It’s a fun song and if you nail it can be show stopper, but it kind felt like she was the nail and the song the hammer.

Jenny Penny’s acrobatic number with performance partner… I didn’t catch his name, was a great take on a classic, old fashioned routine.  They took material that I have seen done at ‘full speed’ and slowed it way down.  You got to see the mechanics of each trick, which was cool, and with the music choice, the routine became sexy.  A simple decision but one I haven’t seen often.  Her fire act was fun, but didn’t quite fill the space.  I would have loved to see her take advantage of the big stage.

As for Boom Boom herself, her style of performance is straightforward tease (at least this selection).  Her contact with the audience is excellent, and she draws things out, going through movements slowly and sensually.  Confident and congenial, Boom Boom L’Roux is a pleasure to watch perform.

All acts considered, this was not the strongest lineup that I have seen at The Triple Door, but it was a promising one.  Boom Boom L’Roux has only recently moved into producing shows on this scale.  With time and a little more practice I believe she will grow into the big stage, and that time may come soon!  Her May lineup is promising and includes: blues artist Lydia Decarllo, the Exposing Composer, EmpeROAR Fabulous!!!, and The Temptress of Taipei, the Shanghai Pearl.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to encourage you to check out the third and final (for this season at least) production of Boom Boom L’Roux’s Late Night Revue, which will take place on Friday, May 18th, show at 11:30 (21+), doors open at 11:00pm.  Tickets are not available yet, but should go online within the next week or two.  Until then check out the performers I’ve listed above, see what you’ve missed and how to take advantage of others opportunities.  You can find Boom Boom L’Roux on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/BoomBoomlroux, and Twitter @BoomBoomLRoux.

Oh, a tip concerning The Triple Door.  Be prepared to wait.  Things rarely start on time at this otherwise splendid Downtown venue.  The serving staff is friendly and responsive, and the shows are worth seeing but unless you actually like the band playing the Musicquarium, standing in line for 30-40 minutes can be somewhat painful.  Just my opinion but I figured I’d share it.

Behind the Pasties: A Burlesque Mockumentary

For the next five weeks you have the opportunity to experience an artistic experiment as conceived by Seattle’s longest running weekly burlesque revue.  Sinner Saint Burlesque, at The Noc Noc, is branching out, theatrically speaking, with a new, entertaining and highly promising show.

Behind the Pasties: A Burlesque Mockumentary gives the audience a peak behind the scenes of Sinner Saint Burlesque.  Host Diva le Deviant dialogues with the audience and with ‘BQ1 interviewer’ Aman, the Chocolate Boy-Wonder, about the history, pre-show rituals, inner secrets and foibles of this troupe of glittering artists.

The audience is told the tale of how Evilyn Sin Claire became known as ‘The Wild Child.’ We are shown how Dona De Couri overcame her insecurities, and like in the story of the ugly duckling, discovered her own beauty, and glamour.  We learn a bit about the secret kinks of the Debutante of Derriere, Lady TaTas, and are made privy to the hard work and the various trials that burlesque artists undertake in training, glamorizing and making their onstage personas… stick.  And for last night's audience, we were given a "where is she now" look at one of SSB's former Sweet Hearts, the 'Martha Graham of Hip Hop', Randi Rascal.

On the surface, Behind the Pasties is standard fare for those who have become accustomed to Sinner Saint’s work.  The individual performances are well executed, sexy, fun and appropriately rhinestoned.  Diva le Deviant is her usual, “Bitch in Charge” self, full of biting wit, and good-natured, over-sexed humor.  Fellow performers, and those intimately connected to burlesque artists will be rewarded with some humorously acted inside jokes, and asides.  In fact the addition of comedic tableaus and mini sketches were my favorite parts of the show.

The emcee-interviewer dialogue added depth to the audience experience, as did, the participation of audience members in a ‘love poem’ from SSB to their fans.  These together with Diva's 'motherly' and affectionate overtures to the audience gave the show the feel of Roxie’s parting line from Chicago, “Thank you, we could not have done it without you!”

Look a little closer, and you might find that ‘Behind the Pasties’ is not yet a finished product.  It is an experiment, or test run, a first draft of something really awesome in the making.  While it is a fun and entertaining show in its current state, it is my hope that the ladies of Sinner Saint Burlesque will continue to develop this show.  I would love to see more history (or comedic pseudo-history), more group sketch work, and eventually I would love to hear the individual voices of the Sinner Saints themselves.

I would encourage Seattle burlesque fans, and fellow performers, to check this show out.  Sinner Saint Burlesque is an ongoing part of Seattle burlesque history. It is due to both the hard work and dedication of the artists, and the love of viewers like you that theirs is a story of success.

Sinner Saint Burlesque performs every Thursday night at The Noc Noc, in Downtown Seattle. Behind the Pasties will run for another five weeks.  For more information you can check them out at http://www.facebook.com/SinnerSaintBurlesque.  As a self-declared SSB fanboy, I don't ask you take my word for it, but I do ask you to see for yourself.

Grab Bag! A Burlesque Revue

Tonight a new producer has made her mark on the ever growing Seattle Burlesque Scene.  Miss Scarlett O’Hairdye, a graduate of the Academy of Burlesque and a founding member of the Sass Boom Bang Burlesque Troupe has launched Unnatural Redhead Productions with Grab Bag! A Burlesque Revue.

Typically the term ‘grab bag’ is one laden with mixed connotations, but the show this evening was pretty solid all around.  The evening had elements of glamour, comedy, seduction, and more with the comic styling of Jenny Sayquah tying things together.

From experienced burlesquers Iva Handfull, Whisper De Corvo and Mitzy Sixx to some of Seattle’s newer talent such as Solange Corbeau, Lotti Glitterati, Ginger Julep and Violet Deville, to belly dancer Katana, and of course producer Scarlett, “Grab Bag!” provides a fair variety of burlesque entertainment.

The highlights of the show were most definitely Iva Handfull, whose precision performance and hyper sexuality is among the best in Seattle, Lotti Glitterati, a Burlesque Starlet in the making, and producer Scarlet O’Hairdye whose in your face attitude was a particular crowd pleaser and whose act was good finish to the show.

As far as back bar entertainment goes, you could do far worse than “Grab Bag!” at The Marsbar, and if you don’t already have plans this Saturday evening, I’d suggest you check it out.  The Marsbar has decently priced drinks, and for its first show Unnatural Redhead Productions has put together a good line up and a consistently entertaining show.

Grab Bag! A Burlesque Revue

Feb 4th @ 8:00pm and 10:00pm.
Tickets $10 at the door.

MOD CAROUSEL in Sinner Saint Burlesque's Winter Guests Extravaganza

Okay, so there are times when writing a review of a show is difficult.  One is when you are friends with the performers and the show is not very good (not applicable).  Two is when you are a bit intoxicated (admittedly applicable).  Three is when the you are friends with the performers and they are so good that they blow your minds (very applicable!).  If any or all of these are true is it almost impossible to be objective, there for, I'm not going to try.

MOD CAROUSEL's performance at The NocNoc tonight was f*ing awesome!  A show about three super sexy super heroes fighting a 'trio' of pop-diva vixens that would turn half of Seattle's Drag Queens green with envy?  How could this not be amazing?  Well it couldn't, because it is amazing!

Okay, forewarning, my Boy calls me "Puddles" for good reason... this puddle is just for Mod Carousel.  ;-)

The Luminous Pariah has been among my top favorite male performers ever since I saw him perform at Magnum, four years ago (ish).  His comedic timing, showmanship and daring would be enough make him amazing.  Add that on top of a smoking hot body?  Okay... a reviewer should maintain objectivity... not objectify.  Two different things.  But it's true.  Luminous takes the Drag art-form and makes it his own.  He lip syncs, and struts about in outrageous costumes, but he is really smart about.  I already think David Attenborough adorable, but thanks to Luminous... well I might need my Sweetie on hand next time I watch The Life of Birds.

The Paris Original made me cry the first time I saw him perform.  Few women, let alone men, have such mastery of the emotional element of ballet as Paris does, and his skill en pointe is breath taking.  What more he blends prima ballerina poise with go-go boy's abandon and that is something even fewer people can do!  So whether he is selling a soul wrenching piece of choreo or making me laugh myself silly with a sly look and boyish grin I adore this performer, and am constantly in awe of his skills.

Trojan Original, the "Strong Man" of this super trio is a bon-a-fide stud muffin.  With the bravado a premier danseur and the talent to back it up, Trojan is a delight to watch.  He is what would happen if a cartoonist captured the disciplined essence of Baryshnikov and the campy styles of a self-aware Schwarzenegger.  On a side note, few hetero-guys can do what Trojan does with impunity.  I'm serious, a lot of straight guys in burlesque, make straight guys in the audience uncomfortable.  Trojan knows how to play his audience.  He tugs at the... um, heart strings, of straight women and gay men, and makes straight boys laugh their asses off, cause he's just that good.

Okay so anyone who has heard me gush over one or all of these boys knows that I have a huge crush on each of them, but let me tell you that after tonight that crush extends to their female member as well.  Leeni, the hostess and chanteuse of the evening was amazing, and played the roles of three different drag queens with the flare of a true musical theatre maven.  I haven't felt this way about a girl since I watched Megan Mullaly perform in Young Frankenstein.  Great stage presence, great voice and excellent versatility.  Brava diva!

And no I didn't forget you Dona, sweetie! Dona De Cuori, the lovely lass whose task it is to hold down her the fort while her Sisters are off in London rocked it tonight.  Dona's blend of dancer and comedienne is solid, and highly enjoyable, and her acts fit beautifully into the story line.  Win!

Okay, gushing done, artistically this was a very good show.  The individual choreo was superb and even though the physicality of the three male performers did not sync up perfectly in the group numbers, their dedication and joy in the art forms did.  As for the show as a whole, it is one of the better examples of a theme show, woven through story, that I have seen in a long time.  The individual acts, pulled from existing repertoire were easy to see in the new light of Leeni's comic book plot line.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me seriously recommend this show.  Well as seriously as I can knowing that their is only one more chance to see it and I want to go again.  :-)  Next Thursday at The Noc Noc.

Back Bar Beauties Burlesque

One of Seattle’s newest troupes, Back Bar Beauties Burlesque, is attempting a new approach to building their audience base. Their holiday show is playing three nights in three different bars, and three different neighborhoods. Last night this gypsy troupe of burlesque performers was at Sonya’s Skyy Lounge in Downtown Seattle. I am a big fan of the traveling show format.  Some of my best experiences as an actor have been with such shows, so I am excited to see a troupe embracing this in the burlesque community.

I applaud the Beauties’ for this concept and the guts to go this route with their shows.  It is hard work and creatively very challenging.  I do want to caution them that they are going to need to ramp up their game if the troupe is going to have staying power.

Individually the acts were all pretty solid, aside from feeling a bit cramped (Sonya’s back bar has a tiny little stage), but as a collection the show felt a bit… lackluster. At first glance the show seems pretty varied. Laela Lovechild’s tap dance routine was high energy and spirited, and I was impressed by her choreography. Tin Pan Sally and Olatsa Assin’s musical theatre themed acts added a lovely element of vocal performance to the show; and Tin Pany Sally's Misery themed piece was pretty darn funny. Madisun Avenue’s wind up doll was a beautiful and fun take on the classic Nutcracker’s Columbine, and Donatella Melies engaged the entire audience with her Christmas tree act. All of this was great!

Where the show lost me was that despite the apparent variety, nearly everything ended the same, followed the same arc of the tease, and honestly there wasn’t enough teasing in the show for me. Stripping and baring a beautiful body is all well and good, but I wanted so much more from these lovelies. I wanted more power on the stage, more confidence, more sensuality. I wanted more costume, more pieces to remove. I wanted more spectacle, perhaps a touch of pageantry.

My final critique is that the group act felt superfluous. It neither introduced something new nor topped what was previously seen. As a finale it kind of dragged. As an encore however it would have worked fairly well. My advice to the ladies of BBBB is to switch the order of curtain call and your group act.

All of this boils down to the structuring of the show. A good burlesque show is itself a burlesque act. There should be an arc, a tease, and a solid finish. The audience should want more but feel satisfied at the same time. This takes practices, trial and error and flexibility to switch things up and if this group sticks with it I think they’ll put together some really fun collections.

Back Bar Beauties Burlesque, with Laela Lovechild, Olatsa Assin, Donatella Melies, Madisun Avenue and Tin Pan Sally, has one more performance of their holiday show coming up at Coppergate in Ballard, December 18th. Help support this troupe and give them some love and encouragement. There is potential here!

PS: If you continue to use the personable and lovely Miss Anita Goodman as your hostess, remember that Anita is the ‘eye of a hurricane’, the calm within a storm.  Don't be afraid to bump it up a notch to provide a stronger contrast with your emcee!
